What services do you offer?
Westies in Need (WiN) is a Canadian group that provides rescue, fostering, transport, medical attention and adoption services for surrendered, abused, abandoned, neglected, and/or homeless West Highland White Terriers in Ontario and Quebec. We are the largest Westie rescue organization in Canada.
What makes you unique in the Pet Community?
We are a group operated by dedicated individuals working to provide a safe and loving environment for these wonderful animals. WiN operates solely by fundraising. We are entirely staffed by volunteers and we do not get any grants or funding and ALL funds raised benefit Westies in need.
When did you start your rescue and why?
We started our rescue 2 years ago. Some Westies we have in our rescue have been taken from puppy mills or are in danger of losing their lives in local Animal Control facilities. The dogs that come into our rescue program come to us from various means. Some are strays; some have been surrendered, abandoned or left at shelters by owners who no longer can care for them due to circumstances such as moving, illness in family, new child, divorce, etc.
Some families need to surrender their Westie and we know that it is hard to have to give up a family Westie, but occasionally a change of circumstances requires you to make this difficult decision. We take in dogs that an owner surrenders so that we can find these dogs the best homes. Regardless of the reason, we are here to HELP!
When an owner surrenders an animal into our rescue, we are not judgmental to the factors as to why an owner would like to find an alternate home for their dog(s). We respect everyone’s privacy.
How does your rescue support the local community?
Westies in Need (WiN) holds a Westie Walk and Fun Day each year. Our 2011 Westie Walk and Fun Day this year will be Sept 11th, 2011 at Mississauga Valley Park!
The day began at 11:00 am with registration, followed by a photo session with our official photographers! As our participants wait for our day to begin they check out our donations/draw table and purchase tickets for some of the great items we had on our donation table. We also have some wonderful vendors this year so there is lots to do before the day began. We have a very short walk around the park, followed by lots of Westie games, great food and great prizes!
WiN operates solely by donations and fundraising. We are entirely staffed by volunteers and we do not get any grants or funding and ALL funds raised benefit Westies in need…so these fundraisers mean the world to us and to the Westies we help.
Out of the love for these little white dogs comes our passion for helping Westies in Need.
Our mission is to: rescue Westies, get immediate medical attention to those in need, foster Westies in a safe, attentive environment, find them loving and forever homes and to also educate the general public to the need for spaying and neutering dogs and the perils of puppy mills. We advocate an end to the operation of puppy mills, pet store animal sales, and the neglect and abuse of these precious dogs.
All monies raised by WiN goes towards paying veterinary expenses incurred. Many dogs we bring into rescue are in need of medical intervention in addition to the regular series of shots and spay/neuter. Such vetting may include dental work, ear infections, blood tests, surgeries, etc. These costs may be in the several hundred dollars or possibly in the thousands. We do what it costs to get a sick Westie well again, so we can find them loving and forever homes.
WiN does not have a shelter or physical location. Instead, we operate through a tight-knit network of rescue coordinators and foster homes, trying to rescue as many Westies as possible.
When Westies in Need was created, first and foremost we wanted our name to be synonymous with high ethical standards. We wanted the people that donated to our cause to feel absolutely certain that their funds were going to be used solely for the dogs that we care for. We achieve this through our ‘open-book’ policy. We will gladly open our books to any individual or group who has donated to us and would like to confirm the use of every single penny we bring in. This is of the utmost importance to us.
We also guarantee that no WiN dog that comes into our rescue is ever relegated to stay in a kennel environment. All of our dogs live inside nice warm homes with their loving foster families till forever homes can be found.
These families work incredibly hard to ensure that the dogs they foster get all of the love and attention they need to help recover from their previous lives and move on with their new life! These dedicated and loving people are the backbone of the WiN team. We appreciate them more than words could ever say.
May all our rescued Westies know that they are now truly and forever home!
